Disability Media & Digital Stories

September 29, 2015

From “Elephant Man” to “The Theory of Everything”, Hollywood cinema often presents disabled subjects as either pitiable or inspiring. Art and media by disabled people themselves tells a different story. Artist and activist Dr. Eliza Chandler discusses her work about the development of disability arts in Canada and shares skills in the technique of digital storytelling.

Earning her PhD from the Social Justice and Education department at OISE/UT, Eliza Chandler is a post-doctoral fellow at Ryerson University’s School of Disability Studies. She is the Artistic Director at Tangled Art + Disability, an organization in Toronto dedicated to the cultivation of disability arts. Chandler is also the president of the Canadian Disability Studies Association and is the co-director of the disability arts community group Project Creative Users.
